I took out Hal and his Brother for the day on Potholes Reservoir.
We launched out of MarDon Resort and began fishing for smallmouth right away. The water was still fairly cool on the main lake with a temp of 48-50F and a stain to the water. I was surprised as the weather has been a little warmer this week but the cold nights and wind have kept the water temps down a bit.
We fished the west side of the lake in the morning with Luhr Jensen Crankbaits in a firetiger pattern and Yamamoto DT Hula Grubs and ended up catching 3 smallmouth off the bat all around the 2 lb. mark. in about 12-15 feet of water off of rock. We ran up into Frenchmans wasteway to see and found extremely cold temps and no fish.
Then we ran up to the dunes for Largemouth. Fishing on the Winchester side we were tossing terminator jigs and Senkos for LM's with no success. My guess is the high pressure system had them pretty skittish. I didnt even see a cruiser in bays that got up to 53-54F. Tossing a Terminator Spinnerbait Hal was able to hook a fat almost 4 lb. Smallmouth.
After that we went out and fished the dam in the wind before heading in. This is when I was fishing a Rapala DT 14 in a firetiger and hooked a fat 4 lb. Smallmouth in about 12 feet.
Ended up with around 14-15 lbs. for 5 fish. Pretty good for a high pressure colder than the past week type of day. Potholes should be on fire soon, due to the fact it has to warm up sometime now. The quality has been there all spring, now we are just waiting on the numbers game.
