Evening started out mostly cloudy but then the rain came. Water became stained and visibility was less than 5 feet. Right before the heavenly floodgates opened, I was fly casting at the south end of the lake when all of a sudden 2 carp jumped about 10 feet to my right. That's the second close encounter I've had with carp this week. Last time was at Green Lake. I had no idea there were carp in Bitter Lake, but apparently there are at least two. After the jump I was able to track them at a distance of about 50 feet. I could see the outline of one and made several casts to its left, right, beyond, in front and finally right on top of it. Even the cast right on top of it did not spook it. That was surprising. Most of the time it ignored my fly, but a couple of times it seemed to follow it but no hook up. Oh man, it was exciting seeing that big outline turn towards my fly. If only I could dial in the right formula, there seems to be potential for some great carp fly fishing at Bitter. Come back later with some cheese and/or corn.
