Day 1 of the Potholes Open:
Jon Werner & I fished the 32nd Annual Potholes Open.
The day started out launching at 9:30AM and we decided to try and get our limit of smallmouth before we run to the dunes for Largemouth. With sunny but slightly windy conditions we thought the SM fishing would work out. The water temp was fairly cold at 46F and we started off on the dam with about 30 other boats around us. It wasa tough grind only catching 4 smallmouth for about 6 hours in 7-25 feet of water. We could not really get on a pattern. All the fish were quality though and we caught them on Yamamoto Hula Grubs.
Then we ran over to the Medicare area and caught on dinker smallmouth in about 15 feet, with 5 fish we decided to run to the dunes for a Largemouth. Back in the dunes up by Crab Creek we fished for a few hours with a Terminator Jig and Yamamoto Flappin Hawg trailer in Brown we were able to catch a 4 lb. Largemouth to seal our bag. The warmest water we found was 51F.
The run back was less than thrilling as it was the roughest water I have ever experienced on Potholes, even snapping one of my battery hold downs and gouging a piece of my bilge. Overall a good day with 15.61 lbs and sitting in 17th Place.
