I thought my high-lite of the day was going to be when I almost stepped on a musky that was about 40 inches at boat launch. I had my waiders on and walked into the water to front of my boat to tie on lures and didn't see a musky checkin me out until I spooked him andd he took off. I made a few casts but he was gone.
I started fishin in front of launch casting at the shore workin a tube out to about 15ft, but no takers. I turned towards deeper water and looked for a school on sonar. At twenty feet I marked fish and dropped straight down to verticle jig with tube. Fish on in about almost instantly, it was first small this year. Drop it back down get another hit right away. When I set and felt the weight I knew it was big. It ended up being a musky about 40in. long. That is my first musky. I was using 6lb. main with 8lb fluoro leader. I was verticle jigging a 3 in. tube also. The pole I was using was a 10.5 light action spinning rod. I geuss I just got lucky. I broke off a another one and missed acouple more but that was it.

I fished for just under 3 hours, most action was in first half hour. Water was 48. Weather was crappy.

I wish I could of got a better pic. but with no net and by myself, that was the best I could do. The tail was perfect. Maybe next time.

How was that fight? I have not had the luck to catch a Muskey. I hooked a big Pike in Michigan when I was a kid but it broke my line instantly.

If you're gonna go with 8lb leader I would switch up the mainline and go with 8lb main and 8lb flouro leader, or 8lb main and 6lb flouro. Using lighter main than leader doesnt really make much sense when it comes to fighting fish, remember a fish of a lifetime is just that, don't risk losing it due to underthinking your setup. If you really want to up your gear and be ready for a muskie or a 4lb smallie I would go to 8lb braid mainline and a 6 foot section of 8lb flouro for leader tied together with a Albright Knot, good feel and light weight but enough power to control bigger fish. Great catches for this early in the year, that musky looks pretty husky, congrats.

Right on procaster but it drives me crazy too(lol) I was up there yesterday. Mostly fished for tigers but tossed a jig for bass every now and then. My day went, 1 musky follow...a few nibbles from smallies and thats it. Then you get both today.
Seriously, nice work and thanks for the report

I was running straight 6lb but wanted to ad fluoro so I went up to 8 for abrasion and teeth. I had a pole with 8lb braid to 8lb mono, one with straight 12lb mono and one with 40lb braid to 20lb fluoro.

I think the musky picture is great...nice shot of the business end of the fish. Besides, it's your first musky. You'll have that memory forever, picture or no picture. If you now have "musky fever", you'll probably catch more in the future that you can get pictures of.

Way to go procaster. I know to down size but a 3 inch grub..? That absolutely kills me..lol..I was out there Saturday. 2nd half of the afternoon. Waiting for the 55 degree sunny weather. Was with Kevinb. He had a follow in a inlet on the north side of Tapps Island and mine was over by dike 12. About a 2 footer. Congrats on the 40"incher and the smallie. Dig the markings on that musky. I agree with Jim very cool photo. And lets not make a habit of stepping on muskies okay...lol. If you're out there and see a white Alumacraft w/ red and black detail.. stop by..maybe you can give me some helpful hints? See ya, Todd
