I went to Fouth of July on Saturday morning. It had been warm the last few days so I was afraid that there wouldn't be enough ice. The only other vehicle in the parking lot was some bird hunters. I went down to the ice and it looked thin. There were very few solid spots around the edges. I went out to the middle of the East end and drilled a test hole just to check the thickness. There was about 5 inches of ice but it wasn't as solid as I hoped. I wasn't going to risk it - especially with no one else around.
Instead I drove over to Hog Lake. I got there around 11:30 and fished until 2:30. Hog had 6" to 8" of good ice. I caught two 14" trout and one small one which I threw back before calling it a day. They were caught on orange mallows and a bright red 1/4 ounce jig.
