Like many anglers will do, I've chosen to ride Hog Canyon until it dies! Could only fish for 2 hours today due to having to make a delivery to my oldest at his school at 11:30. Line in the water at 8:30, utilizing the same 3 holes....plus a few more drilled by the guys that beelined over upon my departure yesterday! Four others on the ice with me.
Between 8:30 and 9:30 I got 7-8 takes and four fish, only one of which, a 14" fattie, ended up on the ice. I carefully released the other three 11-12" fish to fatten up some more. No salmon eggs today, all took maggots on a chartreuse jig. That must have been the "magic hour" because in the next hour I could not buy a bite, even when switching back to my trusty salmon eggs. The fish weren't completely finished, though, for a couple guys were getting some further out in deeper water. I'd have joined them except for the school obligation.
With my departure planned to the minute so I'd be exactly on time, I headed out at 10:45. Before I even got up the hill...BAM...stopped stone cold by a guy who is stuck and blocking the road. He lacks 4WD capability but at least he has chains. After about 10 minutes he gets her done and is moving, as I nervously glance at my watch. Can't be late. Gotta go, gotta go...BAM....near the BLM exit I encounter the kindly Officer Hahn in his WDFW truck. He steps out, stops me, asks me all the cursory questions and checks my license. In the ensuing conversation I forget completely the kid as we talk about lake rehabs, fish size, poachers, etc. Finally we finish and I'm off again. After exceeding every posted speed limit, I arrive at Medical Lake High School at 11:29, just as the kids coming out. Victory!!!
