It was a very cold day today on El. Thankfully I brought the shelter. At times, it was difficult to even keep the hole open because of forming ice. Not many fish were caught today. I believe that the sun and the recent change to high pressure is causing a slower bite. I did manage to catch over 15 fish, most of which were quality perch. I managed my largerst perch to date at 13.25 inches. I think it pushed a pound and a half, but that's just guess work. I kept only 4 perch after releasing the large female for a new year's fry for some friends. All fish were caught on a chartreuse Genz Bug with a green Atomic Nuggie. Waxies, one of the better live baits for ice fishing, produced a few smaller fish today, but it was a challenge to keep them alive and thawed.

Ice- less than an inch of crust over 3-4 inches of slush made walking difficult. With very cold temperatures in the forcast, I can't forsee this slush staying for long.

WAXIE? tell me more. I went out today and cought one 12'' lmb in 3 hrs of fishing. 10;30 through 12;30. Talked with 5 other fisherman who were having the same luck as i was. One guy even had a sonar. You really need an auger with these cold temps. Very diffucult with a hammer. lol. Think i might try hog canyon for some trout next time. sounds like eloika is not really happening yet. Have only heard of you catching much fish. show some pictures next time.

Haha check my other reports for pics! I can only upload to a report. For whatever reason I can't if it's on a post.

BazzDude. Waxies, mousies and of course maggots are all specialtie fly larvae baits that are quite common back East in places like Wisconsin and Minnesota where Ice fishing is huge. They're used to tip teardrop style ice fishing jigs like Northland lures, Fiskas Wolfpack jigs or Genzworms that make up the mainstay of ice fishermen's panfish arsenal- Just like Senko's, spinnerbaits, flippin'jigs and cranks make you so good at catching Bass during warmer weather. I can assure you that Aaronash42 is legit on his fishing success at Eloika. The moon phase has not been great as of late and I know from bass tournament fishing how bluebird skies and high barrometric pressure can affect the bite, espeacially during the cold water period.
