I don't know what I was doing wrong today, but that was possibly the worst ice fishing that I've experienced. I drilled so many holes today and pulled absolutely nothing from them. My buddy ended the day with 2 sunnies and one very small bass. I hit this lake Monday and could hardly keep them off. Today, nothing. I saw some people pass with a bag of what looked to be perch, so someone caught a few, just wasn't me.

Used many jig shapes/ color combinations. Some with live bait some with artificials. I fished in water ranging from 12 feet to 5 feet. Just couldn't make it happen today.

Aaron. I don't know how this affects your fishing - but on Monday the Moon fishing times book was rated high but going down thru out the rest of the week. I have a 10 year spread sheet that corrosponds with moon phase number ratings and my panfish catch rates. It works for me and I usually don't travel far to fish for Crappie if the days are rated low. Interestingly, the ratings don't seem to matter with trout. Check out Rick Taylors Moontimes/Astro tables fishing hand book pocket calender online. Thanks for the report and better luck next time. P.S> Did you get any Pheasants over at Outlook? Jiggy

@Jig- Yeah we got into some birds. It's always a great time down there. We only ended up with a loner pheasant, but we found 4 different coveys of quail on private land that we hunted for 3 days. We almost got our limit each day too so there was a lot of shooting (and missing mostly =) Thanks for the tip on the tables. I will have to get that right away and plan according.

Sorry you had a skunky day ice fishing. I missed the morning bite, but couldn't resist getting out for at least a little bit. Was rewarded with a few fish, although I believe I wouldn't have gotten so lucky without a sonar. I could see lots of sniffers and fish who were interested, so I'd stay in some holes just seeing what I could do to get them to rise and be interested. It also helped when I saw fish make a beeline off the bottom to meet my lure, I could stop and jig right where they were stopped.

Jay K, i like reading your reports, they are very informative and i have not made it out yet this year but i will, and i will be using a lot of your tips along with others as well. My fishing time is limited but i am not sure i would use a sonnar to catch em. It sounds lot like cheeting to me, Takes a lot of the fun out of it. I bet it is fun in a way as well don't get me wrong but the whole concept of fishing(beside all the fun times and good stories)is outsmarting the fish without technoligy. Simply throw a few jigs in a bucket and some maggots and head out and out smart the fish seems like much more of an accomplasment to me and that to me is fishing. Well atleast through the ice.(unless you are really fishing for food instead of pleasure)any how i don't really see many reports from you on soft water. Are you only a ice fisherman? Stay safe out there. Bazzdude.
