Here is a more close-up picture from Boxermom's post on the fish we caught this weekend. We think it is a kokanee, but others say it is a triploid, if anyone can help identify, it would be much appreciated.

Judging by the picture it looks like a big rainbow. It may or may not be a triploid rainbow. Could be a hold-over that's just fared very well and eluded capture until now.

Rainbow for sure. The fin irregularities suggest triploid, but that isn't a 100% solid method of differentiating the two. Any eggs at all in that hen?

Here's the deal, The majority of larger rainbows in American Lake come from Bill's Boat House. They don't release them until they are 1 or 1.5 pounds (talked to the guy a few months back) When in nets like that, the fish often attack eachother and otherwise get damaged fins, that's why the cuadal (tail) fin looks all jacked up, and I catch them in there with jacked up tail fins all the time. It's just a good sized rainbow. Nice Catch at any rate! Not 8 pounds though :-)

Triploid for sure based on its split tail. Triploids are raised in net pens that force the fish to sometimes swim against the nets and other Triploids causing damage to the fish’s fins. I’ve seen Triploids come to the net without so much as a hint of a tail. Congrats on the nice fish and thanks for posting.

im gonna have to go with a big rainbow as well. i've seen some huge rainbows come out of the lakes with damaged tail fins like that. but that is a beautiful trout none the less

I dont think american has triploids. I have never heard of them being planted there. Who knows, i could be wrong. But still a great fish!

yea, usually the triploid will have spots almost like a brown without the colors.. this looks like a nice rainbow that has lived a good life in American Lake.. nice catch

It is a rainbow. Again. Most likely a pen raised holdover. Thanks for the report.

Nah Big D, it's not a triploid. It was raised in a net pin though. Call Bills Boathouse and ask 'em. They stock American Lake, the state hasn't done it for a long time now.
