Ok so I need help here it used to be when I would go out to newman lake this is ohh 6 years or so ago I couldnt keep the catfish off my line . Now the story has changed my fiance and I go out there on a regular and have yet to hook anything worth talking about . What the hell is going on here I dont think WDFW killed off the lake all I can think is all the smaller game fish have gone into hiding . Because of the muskie in the lake if anyone has any tips, hint or suggestions please dont hesitate . Let me know whats going on or maybe what I should try out as far as bait I have used the classic worm on the bottom. Also I have used gizzards and liver I am at a utter loss here so if anyone has tips for me hit me up thanx

Tiger Muskies tend to prefer to eat tinch and other garbage fish they will eat the occasional spiny rays but there not their staple diet. People say the same thing that their eating all the trout in there too and this is also false. They ha vent stocked the lake for a couple of years now is why theres not as many trout. If you look at the water column tigers dont live in the deep cold waters of the lake such as the trout and bottom feeders, they tend to be in about 12ft and less feeding on blue gill and perch. If anyone wants to know what a asset the tigers are they need to contact the resorts at curlew lake and ask them what great fishing they have there on bass, trout, and other species since the tigers were intruduced. good fishing everyone

LOL - Craig says that they eat the "occasional spiny ray" then goes on to say that they are "in about 12ft and less feeding on blue gill and perch", which are spiny rays. On the other hand, Catfish are not spiny rays, tend to spend their time in water less then 12 feet, and ............... OK, first, catfish go in spurts. You can overpopulate pretty easy, like Hog Canyon did, or they can get a virus and die off. I suspect that this is what happened to Newman. The virus does not kill them all off, so they will be back, but you may need to find the spot on the spot to find them now. Additionally, the bullhead cats are indeed a major target of the bass and tigers, more so the bass, but as the tigers have thinned out the thinned of smaller fish the bass have grown and, well, you get the point. Because it was Bullhead Catfish, not channel catfish, worms are the best bait. If you have a boat, if you fish at night, I can offer some ideas, but the easiest route would be to consider fishing in March or April of next year when they move around the shore line looking to spawn. Thanks for the tips and suggestions im looking for a good catfishing spot I really do enjoy catfishing it seems fishing at night is the only time you get to relax while fishing . That is due to the fact that no matter where you go now you get swarms of people fishing from shore letting their kids and dogs run amuck . I bring my dog fishing with me as i fish from shore but he stays by my side the whole time so if you know of any good spots where i can hit cats all night long please let me know thanx .

bigboy, I wish I did. I too love to fish for cats but good cats are few and far in between in this area. Sprague use to have some good cats, but now that it has been killed off, the bullheads are gone. They said they were going to put channels in again, but I have no confirmation that they did or that anyone has caught any yet. Liberty has some bullheads in it, but you can't fish from the public access at night - boat only, must spend the night. Hauser in Idaho has some great bullheads and channels, but I have never seen one caught from the public access. If you are up to the drive, the lower part of the Grande Rounde river near Asotin has some great Channel Cats, and they want you to keep all you catch there - be prepared for snakes. The Snake River near Clarkston has some awesome Channel Cats as well, but I never fish it for Cats so I can't give you much information there.

anglinarcher my point wasnt nessecary discussing which fish were spiny rays it was more focused tword their diet isnt the large mouth bass and trout which everyone tried to say thats all they eat and thats why theres not as many of those fish anymore. Sorry i forgot to put the words large mouth bass in the other eply. Also all fish go through cycles and because fishing is great one year and then not in a few years just means the fish might be at the end of their cycle (example :crappie go through a 7 year cycle). Channel cats can be caught from the shore of the Snake River also down by Lower Granite Dam.
