The fremont canal area is full of small mouth bass, mostly shorties but is perfect area for teaching as the whole shoreline is uniform, and the fish are aggresive. I've taken a couple people who are brand new to fishing like me, and usually a split shot and nightcrawler bounced around the bottom, everyone catches something. But I picked this friday to learn some new gear. First at bait was some southbend generic gold spinner, which has not produced even a bite at any lake for me but i found bites along a strong shadow and evening sun but had to let the spinner sink as much as i dared (snaggy risk!) Caught four short bass before i finally did get caught up and lost it. oh well, they come in a 6 pack.

Next up was a spinnerbait in white, never used one before so I'm going by online tips. Damn heavy lure! probably better suited for a heavier rod. I didn't catch any but i did see a bass follow it on occasion. I feel like a smaller one would produce better for me on slow retrive, not to mention go easier on my rod and reel.

Pulling out a jighead hook, i put on a yamamoto grub. I was afraid this would sink too fast and not swim right. It got caught up a couple times, even bending the hook severely and dumbing the point. But i did manage to pull up one bass on it, totally inhaled too. So points for Gary but i'm using a smaller weight hook next time.

A friendly otter was swiming around the shore and took pause long enough for one quick snap shot.

Finally i had some 5 inch finess worms, thinner than the senko worm i've used before. And I want to practice it wacky. A small drop shot hook I think kept me out of snaggs for a while... Once again, no experience on how much weight, size of hook or retrieve. So just threw em out and tried to jig them slowly back over the rock. Caught two little smallies and fewer misses compared to when i used a texas style rig. In all a fun day. Two fish were retained due to injury. The otter was not harmed.
