I took my first trip to American Lake yesterday, even though I've been fishing for years and only live 10 miles away. The first thing I must say is that this lake is great. The terrain varies from grass, weeds, and lilys to rocky bottom shallows, and what seems to be thousands of docks. The rock bass can get overwhelming though, because they seem to tear up more of your bait then they're worth. If you can put up with that and the constant pounding of speed boat wakes, then there is a great chance at catching some huge largemouths. I targeted the inside of weed lines, about 4-6 feet deep and 20 feet off shore around the islands. I used natural colored robo worms and I Texas riged on an ultra light rod, beefed up with 10lb test. I caught a 2 1/2 lb plus largemouth and some worthwhile smallmouth, not to mention the rock bass. My boat will be on this lake alot this summer. I can't wait to hit all those docks once the water warms up about 5 to 7 degrees. Hope to be seein' you all out there fishing. Thanks for reading.
