I fished Medical today from 11:30 until about 2:00. Surface water temp down again, to 61....will it ever warm up? A good wind from the south at about 10 MPH. I initially started by fishing nymphs and chironomids deep in 28 feet of water. This yielded only one small bump in 30 minutes. In the meantime, I noticed several fish rise near the banks so I pulled anchor and headed shallow. Upon arrival I noticed both chironomids and damsel nymphs. The chronies were were very small so I opted for a damsel nymph which I fished under an indicator. This got me 3 good takes in the next 30 minutes, with two good browns to net and another lost. This action didn't last though so I headed back deep, where I got three good takes on chironomids fished right on the bottom, one 22" rainbow to net, one snapoff and one clean miss. The rainbow was an absolute hoot, taking line several times and providing 4-5 good leaps. I had them dialed in.....and then the wind died, the surface went flat as glass, and I couldn't buy another look in the last hour.
Artificial lures and flies with single, barbless hooks are the rule at Medical Lake. The use of bait, for any species, is strictly prohibited.
