so, decided that the trout in martha lake had finally calmed down enough that i wouldnt get fed and bored up releaseing dozens of stockers as i hunt for the nice holdovers. launched at 4:30am trolled a orange spin and glow on one rod, chrome flatfish on the other, after releasing about a dozen fat 10 to 12 inchers(the usual and atleast the put up a good fight on ultralite gear) i decided to scope out some of the epic martha lake bass im so accustom to seeing.

last year i was already seeing hatchling bass in the end of may but i figured maybe the cold weather had slowed down the spawn and i might be able to spot some bedding bass for once(Ive never had sucess in the past) the sun came out and i started cruising along about 4o to 50 feet off the lillys not totally sure what to look for, but it wasnt long before i saw a big green flash way up in the lillies, i almost did a double take cause it was to perfect, seeing a bass from about 75 feet awake just sitting there. motored up close to the nest, 2 females about 5 to 6 pounds and two males from 1.5 to 2 pounds just hanging out spawning,

i fished that nest for a couple hours with only a couple takes and couldnt get em to stick so i started searching again when after about 5 minutes I came across 6 fish all 4 to 9 pounds sitting on a single nest. super subtle presentation twitched right on the nest produced 2 fish in an hour and a half, first was a male about 4 pounds and then this female that was a bit over 7, kinda a fun fight on 6 pound test even though i was mostly just fighting lillypads the whole time as the fish just get taking line and wrapping up more lillies.

All in all the fish arent agressive at all and i had to put in alot of time but i was cool to see quite a few big fish, all of them would swim up to the boat and stare at me and follow the boat shadow around.

there arent alot of bass on this lake I searched half the entire shoreline and only saw 12. I also saw a 12 to 15 pound carp.

nice report! good job on putting in the effort to catch those fish!! i have only caught little dinks (largemouths) while i was trout fishing. caught a couple 5 - 6 inchers on a rooster tail before just right off the dock. never really tried to go after big bass in there before. i know that martha has a couple of monsters though because one time i was fishing and a man says wow look at that fish! i look over and without even thinking i said oh that's a carp just because of the sheer size of it. then i was like wait a minute, i don't think martha lake has carp in it, so i walk over closer and take a look and it's a MASSIVE largemouth that was a good 24 inches longer AT LEAST and it was just a BEAST!!

What size are the hold over trout, and how many little planters do you catch to one hold over? That is a big bass!

dude there are huge bass in that lake! i live in vancouver and use to come up for the summer to visit my mom and she use to take us there are me and brother were always getting help from the locals and even the guy who lives in the house by the dock and he said there is a bass that may be 13 pounds and i thought he was lying. my first night fising there i saw it eat 3 holdover trout that were atleast 18-22 inches. then we were at the boat launch and we walked over to the dock that belongs to the houses to the right of the launch and we were just goofing off and we saw 4 or 5 that were easily 24+ inches and really deep and that was almost 5 years a go. that lake has ridicously huge bass in it just hard to get the big ones to hit because they only eat trout or perch or the baby ducks that are always there.

I am from New England originally and I go to Martha Lake on a regular basis, but I have never seen a bed. Back east the beds are very easy to spot. There are other lakes around this area that have a ton of bass and originally beds, but I never see them in Martha. Is there something different I should be looking for there, or are they only in one area?

I have looked for beds out here in past years and only just found some that day, there are very few and like i said not alot of bass in the lake, i prefer keeping something a secret, all i can say is that the beds all were in particular spots that had several key features.

One time I saw a massive largemouth surface right next to the dock. It was probably 18+in. It went down and came back up again about 4 times. I have never caught any bass in that lake. Now when I go to the dock there is no sign of fish anywhere near the dock. A very good lake near there is Stickney lake. There is tons of bass in there. You should try it out.
