Arrived at the lake at about 10:30. Surface water temp 62. Winds swirling from the West and NW at 15-20 MPH. My fishing buddy and I began by fishing the shallows along the north bank with chironomids and small nymphs under indicators. In an hour we got only 1 small brown and received a few half-hearted bumps. There were very few bugs on the water at this location.
We then moved out into deep water and immediately noticed ongoing chironomid hatches. This didn't amount to much for the fish seemed disinterested as compared to early May. The hatch was fairly consistent, though. In the next couple hours we did manage a few nice browns and a large rainbow on olive, brown and red patterns fished near the bottom. No tigers today. The rainbow went nuts and was a blast to land! Ditto for the browns who are much fatter this year and with warmer water temps are now running, jumping and taking line.
As a reminder, Medical is a selective gear regulations lake, meaning artificial lures and flies only with a single, barbless hook. The use of bait for angling for any species is strictly prohibited, as evidenced by the couple I saw busted on the north end a couple days ago!
