6/5/2010 10:10:00 PMI experienced the same issues with 6lb flourocarbon leaders when fishing in Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish with downriggers. If I were to venture a guess, they were resident chinook. I haven't caught one in Lake Sammamish, but I'm sure they are in there. When they take your lure there is no bump, the rod tip just gets wet and the reel sings. Last resident chinook I brought to the boat weighed over 8lbs. I now run at least 8lb leader when hooked up to the downriggers and haven't experienced a break-off on the strike since.

6/5/2010 10:57:00 PMYeah, the friend I was fishing with is a long time local and he has fished the lake for years and caught resi chinookers out of there before, we kind of were thinking to ourselves that might have been way it was.
Cody, the second time the line didn't break, the fish just came loose before I had much of a chance to fight him.
Snake, yessir, the docks were completely submerged. Not too much of an issue with my 16' aluminum, but I saw plenty of people having fun with other vessels! LOL!

6/6/2010 5:13:00 AMI have had bad luck with p-line. As for flourocarbon, I don't go lower than 8#. Otherwise you might as well use regular mono if you go lower. The stuff is just too brittle. Thanks for the report.

I don't know what those 2 fish were that you hooked and lost... but that's the one cool thing about losing big fish that you didn't get to see --- you become more curious about what it was and it keeps you going back! My guess..... a large rainbow trout. I caught a 25 inch Rainbow last year that almost ran away with my fully spooled reel of 4lb test line. Another possibility is that your line got wacked by a large smallmouth or Largemouth bass. There are largemouth in that area you were fishing. If you were close to shore you might have raised their curiousity as well. I would think a resident chinook would be in the wide open of the lake at this time of year down deep. Better luck next time on that!!
