Medical has been VERY SLOW, not only today but for the last two weeks. I suspect this is due to the decrease in water temps. Nearly three weeks ago the surface water temp was 63-64. Last week, after several days of cold, turbulent weather, it had dropped to 58-59, and the fishing collapsed. Surface activity slowed dramatically despite continuing hatches of chironomids and damsels. Solid takes were replaced by bumps and taps with hookups nearly impossible. Additionally, the fish I was able to catch were recent plants, all rainbows, tigers and browns in the 8-11" range. It was as though Medical's large fish had disappeared.
Today the water temp climbed back to 61 and I could sense the difference. Many more fish were working the surface, chasing damsels. For the first time in nearly three weeks I was getting solid takes, a good indicator by itself. A few good 16-18" brownies to net and a nice rainbow lost while fishing still water nymphs and chironomids deep. IMO, things will only continue to improve as the weather and water continue to warm.
As a reminder, Medical is a selective gear regulations lake, meaning anglers must use articicial lures and flies with a single, barbless hook. The use of bait is strictly prohibited.
