This report is going to be a recap of my trip over to our cabin on Twin Lakes for memorial day weekend.

Friday Afternoon:
Stopped over at Log Cabin earlier that morning for breakfast and the dude at the counter told us that they had just planted a couple thousand Trips out of Rufus Wood ranging from 5-14 pounds. We decided to give it a go for a couple of the big guys later that afternoon during a momentaty break from torrential downpours. We started off fishing south twin from shore with not so much as a nibble in over 2 hours. We fished slip bobber rigs and powerbait off the bottom but found no takers. The water level was a bit high and I think this may have had to do with out lack of bites, although can never be sure. We decided to call it quits on South Twin and headed back the other direction stopping to "look at" a couple other accesses along the way but we did not fish. Scoped out Carson Beach through the binoculars and noticed it was completely empty and decided to give it a go off the dock there. After about 45 minutes of fishing I got a nibble on powerbait 12" off the bottom and it was FISH ON, after a lengthy battly I landed a 6 lb triploid (pictured) which we through in the box for dinner. We fished a while longer with no other nibbles and eventually got stuck in a downpour and kept fishing till we got sick of being drentched. We were both surprised that we did not catch any smaller planter fish at either location, and that this big boy was the only fish of the day.

Saturday:
On Saturday evening we headed down to Lakeview Beach on North Twin to give it a go off of the docks. Fished slip bobbers and powerbait again and produced fish on both setups, although no lunkers! My grandpa landed a nice Brook Trout around 16" or so which we released, and we managed several other smallish trout, 4 planters and a nice 2 lb holdover rainbow but NO triploids. Quit fishing when the sun went down.

Sunday:
Fished about an hour and a half at the docks down at Lakeview with slip bobbers early in the morning and managed several more small fish and another one about 2 lbs. All fish were released. Although the rain had broken for the day the wind started wailing around 9:00am and we got blown off the water. The wind didn't calm down until around 10pm and we didn't really have a chance to fish after the morning outing although faired the wind for about a half an hour later in the day before relizing it was just un-fishable.

Monday:
Monday saw a little bit of everything from sunshine to biblical flood type rain storms. We hit a good gap in the early afternoon and decided to head over to Round Lake (a tribal members only lake located a few miles down the road from Twin). My partner was using powerbait and had set his rod on the tackle box to use as a rod holder. He landed 2 smallish brookies pretty much right off the bat, and after about 30 minutes more waiting his pole doubled over and started making its way off the dock and into the water. He lunged forward for the rod and missed it before it splashed into the water. He reached again over the edge of the dock and FELL IN! Over his head off of the dock! We all had a great laugh about the whole ordeal. When he came to the surface, rod in tow, I grabbed ahold of the pole to find there was still a fish on the line! I set the hook and the fish instantly jumped, a hefty triploid! After a long battle on 6lb line we landed a triploid about 7 pounds, really nice looking fish. We took him home and dropped him off to dry off and headed back out ourselves....

We headed back over to Carson Beach on North Twin to give it another shot and the weather was still holding up nicely. We fished powerbait for quite a while with no takers at all, not even a nibble. I was re-baiting and hucked a chunk of powerbait off the dock and about a minute later a fish swirled up and nabbed the bait about 2 feet from the dock!! After about a half hour more of soaking bait with no takers we decided to quit. My grandpa pulled in his line and threw his bait in the water and to out surprise the SAME fish swirled up and snagged his bait!! Quick thinking lead me to take the weight off my line and cast out just powerbait and swivel. The swivel carried the bait down very slowly right next to the dock and sure enough WAMMO he came swooping out and nailed the powerbait. Something neither of us had ever seen, we both got a good kick out of it. Fish turned out to be a nice male rainbow, about 2.5 lbs. He swallowed the bait so we had to keep him.

Overall we had a very fun trip. We were planning to hit Roosevelt for trout and walleye, but the weather would not allow us to get down to the river in that slippery mud!! They've also got the lake well drained out and most boat launches are well up and out of the water still. A few more weeks and the river should be in good shape to fish.
