I Went down to the lake after Dropping Cindy off at work this morning (man is life good) with the intention of catching some Kokanee. Trolled the Lakeside area , and across the lake from there with no hits, and didn't mark any schools. Saw a few boats working the area but no fish. Went on up to the Rocky Point area, and was able to mark scattered fish, which I thought were silvers, but after working them a while and catching two squa... AAAAAH, Pikeminnows, and one Lake trout, I decided maybe they weren't kokes, and decided to troll for lakers. I had been using the usual wedding ring set ups for the kokes, so switched out to a M 2 Blue metalic Flatfish with a small chunk of Pikeminnow on the stinger, and one of Joe's Ace HiFlies with the wigglefin, and a piece of Pikeminnow. Started out across the lake toward the opposite shore with the ace hifly at 135 feet or so, and worked the bottom contour with the flat fish. About half way across the ace hifly went to dancing, and fish on. I boated a small (22 incher) Mack. Lowered the fly back down and went on my way. Worked down lake zig-zagging from the trench back toward shore till I reached 150 feet or so and back out to the deeper water. Was able to pick up two more lakers this way with 3 of the 4 taking the flatfish
, which I worked close to the bottom. At the end both presentations were close to the bottom. Had a couple of takedowns that didn't stick, and a double snap off the clip which I wasn't able to hook up on. all were in the 22-24 in range. The pic of the depth finder is of the downrigger balls coming up after both lures were hit and knocked off the clip. Nice group of arches. The skunk is off for the lakers, I boated 3 while intentionally trying for them. WAAA HOOO. I guess all I needed was some Pikeminnow to sweeten the deal. Tight lines and sharp hooks

Great job, Loui!!! When I see a depth sounder full of arcs like that, that's when I stop and drop a jig on their heads! That's fun, too!

Well deserved Lou. For some reason I thought the lures used were tipped with pike minnow during your other trips! Is the date in the picture correct (5/1)? So the tip of the day is: first catch the bait, then target the mack. I wonder if tipping the hooks with Kokanee would also work. I know that would be a good eating fish to sacrifice but if they are running so small this year......who knows........might work in a pinch. I like that the downrigger lines can be scene on the graph. Do you have to do anything special to the fishfinder settings to get the detail shown on the screen in the picture?

Again, way to go. let us know how they eat, won't you? Cheers!

MOTOBOAT, My Bad or what, apologies for the date typo on the pics, it SHOULD have been June 01, 2010. Thanks for catching that MotoBoat. Tipping the hook with a Koke works real well. LOL. I just haven't had the Macks hold onto the Koke until I could get him to the net. On the depthfinder, what is seen is the Balls being tracked as they are being raised after the fishing line was snapped out of the clips. the hits were almost at the same time on both rods, so after I tried to set the hook on the first one, missed it, hit the up switch on the down rigger, then grabbed the other rod to set the hook, missed it too. Usually I just hit the up switch as I'm taking the rod out of the holder, just a matter of habit. The finder was set at 50khz (dual frequency transducer) for tracking in deeper water, and I cranked the sensitivity up to 100%. you get some surface clutter, but ok for these depths.

Hi ya Tom, I'm gonna have some jigs in the boat next time, so I can give that a try. Thanks for the comment.

Hey afk, I'll have to try again to see if that trip was just a fluke, or if maybe I've started to learn the technique. Only more fishing trips will tell.

Just so you know you can't use game fish for bait.

Thank you CWTF, I now have some shrimp smelly jelly to use, and I'll pick up some herring next time to add the fish flavor. Your comment is appreciated. Stay safe and well
