Medical Lake's productivity has dropped off drastically over the past week or so, despite the presence of decent hatches. In the past 3 days, my partner and I fished for at least 15 hours, probably more, and got only 8-9 fish between us. Personally, I've been getting takes at an average of only one an hour, awfully slow, even for early season. We talked to many an accomplished fisherman who left with the skunk still on his back.....this after several hours of fishing. In fact, I talked to several guys during this period who left without getting a single strike! None of us could figure it out. Water temp is up to 46 and chironomid hatches are becoming more prolific, although the fish do not seem to care one bit. For example, there were seven of us throwing chironomid patterns today, from late morning til mid-afternoon, in the midst of several hatches. One guy got three fish, three others got one apiece, and three left fishless and without a single take. That's like 30 manhours of fishing for 6 fish, or 1 fish every 5 hours between the seven of us! And I've fished with these folks before, they know what they're doing. It's as though the fish are scattered all over the lake, an issue compounded by Medical's low density, IMO. Oh well, at least there's plenty of room in the parking area as fewer people are turning out here!
