In the interest of saving gas (household still short 1 income) I fished Big Lake today. Launched the boat around 9:00 AM and headed the NE shore. Over the side went a dark green woolly bugger at 30 pulls. I drug it around for an hour or so with only one bite so I did the switch up, over the next 3 or 4 hours I drug around dodger/fly, dodger/wedding band, dodger/dick night combos and flat lined dick nights with no luck. I decided to pull the plug on the north end of the lake and headed down to the flats at the south end.

At the south end I was metering a number of fish on the structure so I fished a 4” gold Senko for a couple hours. For my efforts I got to feel 1 fish pick up my bait and spit it out. Being new to bass fishing I thought that was pretty cool but it was time to move on. I ran back up the east shore looking for structure or bait schools.

Running up the east shore and at about 1/3 of the way from the north end of the lake I metered a huge bait school, or so I thought. It turned out to be a large school of perch. Over the side went the anchor and I fished the school of perch for a couple hours. The water was 26’ deep and there was a large brush pile or something that the fish were holding over. I fished gold, gold/yellow, yellow/white mini jigs tipped with a worm and a worm baited hook for a couple hours. Everything proved to be productive. I didn’t count the fish but I am sure that I caught 40-50 fish. They were mostly perch but I did lose a nice trout trying to bounce it into the boat. I also caught a 12" perch and the smallest bass I ever saw.

All in all it was a good day and at least I stayed dry. Which is more than I can say for some Sedro-Woolley boys who flipped their small aluminum a few yards off the boat ramp?
