Got a late start and hit the lake around 11:00am and headed North from the Newport Launch. Stopped and trolled from Groat Point to the bridge and then along the Northside of 520 until 2:30 with nothing to show for my troubles. I was marking plenty of fish between 10' and 20' but nothing was hitting in that zone. Ran down to Luther Burbank to give the dog a potty break and picked up a few perch off the docks in 12' of water. I decided to give my Pink Salmon rig (pink glow mini hoochie behind a small flasher) a shot and put it down 45' trolling from the docks to the North end of the Island. Didn't even have a chance to sit down after putting the rod in the holder and fish-on! Released a 4+ pound chinook and put the rig down again. 15 minutes later one more take down and this one just ran and ran until I thought I lost it. I quickly reeled in my line and found my gear attached to the fish almost next to the boat which immediately turned into another run. Well I got the fish to the boat and it was another chinook well over 22" and at least a couple of pounds heavier than my previous fish. Released the fish and called it a day. I'm going to re-petition the WDFW to open this lake to fin clipped chinook, I can't fathom why they are protecting them. The water temps varied between 58 and 62 degrees and was quite stained South of Groat Point. A special shout out the the nice boat captain who felt he needed to get a better look at me playing my fish and buzzed me in his 35' boat at maximun wake speed. If I see you again I'll be sure to share some of my rocks with you.

Hmm.. LOL. about that other Cpt. I hope you do G-man.

2 stars for two chinook?? Nice report. I haven't seen any reports lately from you, and I always look for them. Have you just not been out? Enjoy your summer!

Perhaps my encounter with the oblivious captian(s) influenced my rating. Lord help me but I'm beginning to think of the resident chinook as nuisance fish. I missed a few of my regular fishing days due to illness and the kids baseball games and the times I've been out it was just for a few hours. I'm going to ramp it up over the next couple of weeks in preparation for the cutthroat derby on the 13th of June and hopefully my catch ratio will get back to normal. Hope to see you out on the water!

I have asked several folks from WDFW anent Lake Washington Chinoooks. They always give me a hazy answer, e.g., were thinking about a season. I agree they are becoming a nuisance fish. I'd like to be able to keep at least one each trip. I sure like to hear a better explaination as to why w ecan't keep 'em, than a short of shrug of their shoulders, as if they aren't even sure we have Kings in the lake.

Thanks for the report G-Man. I always look forward to reading your posts. I am going to give it a shot today. BTW, good minds think alike. No good reason to not allow fishing for unclipped chinook!

I believe I know why the State is reluctant to open Lake Washington for chinook, tribal fishing rights. They need to secure an agreement with the tribes to ensure that the lake doesn't get netted once they declare it open for the retention of chinook, friggin Boldt decision.
