Fished W. Medical from 10:00 to 2:00. Water temp 53, winds SW at about 10-12. Arrived to find and incredible chironomid hatch ongoing and the swallows buzzing the water, scooping them up. The fish, however, were not impressed...at least with my patterns. In the first hour I managed only 1 fish and 2 other very subtle takes while fishing chironomids. Nothing was happening. Even the 7-8 bank fishermen were going fishless. I then kick-finned around for an hour stripping a still water nymph. This yielded only 2 fish. Seeing that the hatch was intensifying, I headed to shallow water on the west bank. This was just after 12:00. Simultaneously, or so it seemed, someone or something rang the dinner bell. The next hour and some change was ridiculously fun as fish after fish took a black zebra midge fished 6 feet down in 8 feet of water, This bite went on until 1:15, then stopped as quickly as it started. Only 1 more fish in the next 45 minutes. 18 fish total today, all rainbows. Three at 18-20", a half dozen at 14-16" and the remainder 10-12" catchables or last years fry. All were healthy and fought incredibly well!
