I fished Deer Lake lastnight from 430 to dark and hooked two macks and lost them both. One was about 6-7 lbs the other was smaller and didn't get to see it. It was my first time fishing there and didn't really know where to start, so I started working the drop off just outside the public launch area. Marked a few fish in that area, hooked the first fish there but didn't have him on for very long. The second fish was in the same area and got him to the boat, but hooked popped out before i could get a net on him.
All in all it was good trip, but deffinately still learning that fishery for the macks. any advise would be greatly appreciated. I was using downriggers at about 20-25 feet, trolling spoons, with no flasher. My question is, has anyone tried flies or hoochies with flashers and am I fishing the correct depth this time of year? Figured they would be a bit shallower this early in the season so I stuck with that plan.
I never have fished for macks before so this was a learning experience for me, but still had fun.

I would say that is a good depth to starte out at. In the past a great early area is usaully the east by southeast section of the lake. The flat in front of the old Hainies resort area has always been a good early season Mack spot. Although, I do know a local fishing the narrows using a metalic blue quickfish and doing quit well at the before mentioned depths. Fish On!

I fish a white with pink spots quikfish it seems to be my fishiest lure. I have caught a lot of macs right after I pop my line outta the rigger to reel it in. So I troll dodgers about 25 ft and kinda jig them while I troll and the macs will hit it as soon as I jig. I think they must follow the lure around the lake and strike when thw speed picks up. good luck
