So another Fishing Season has begun!
The Opening Day of Fishing has become a hallowed tradition for the BBs of BL.
Today we began the fishing expedition as we have in the past: early in the morning. Due to Daylight Savings Time in effect, a little pre-dawn glow was on the horizon as we dipped our predatory fishing vessel into the nearly-overflowing waters of Williams Lake. The lake level is high due to the melting of generous amounts of white Global Warming the region received last winter.
We were aware that there were a few other piscatorial pursuers on the lake; however, we did manage to stay out of their way as we trolled off the northern shoreline of the lake. The morning’s fishing began with a still lake surface and no wind to disturb it--- later, as we were heading back to the boat launch, the lake surface was pretty roughed-up by increasing winds.
The fishing was great. We received hits on our offerings within 100 yards of the Public Boat Launch. A large rainbow trout, nearly 20”, latched on to my lure and I nearly had him to the net when he “thumbed his nose” at me with his fin, gave the lure a quick snap of his torso--- and disappeared. TRUE STORY; The Other Guy In The Boat will vouch for it! The lucky duck… not five minutes later HE hooked a lunker. And then he boated it. My ears are still ringing from his wicked laughter…
We got to see an osprey ATTEMPT to fish… you know how an osprey is SUPPOSED to fish: It soars above the lake surface, hunting for a fish dumb enough to swim slowly near the surface. As the osprey spots said dumb fish, it goes into a dive and pulls-out of the dive just above the lake surface, and grabs the dumb fish (now known as “dinner”) by its talons, then it performs a Chandelle just above the lake surface, carrying away its prize dinner. But, on THIS, the Opening Day of Fishing, we see an osprey doing an imitation of a near-sighted man smacking the water with a broom. It dove from the sky and made solid contact with the lake, emitting a loud SMACK! It then rose from its contact with the water like a man after being hit on the head with a coconut, but with no fish in its grasp to mitigate the embarrassing performance. To be courteous, I DID applaud its INTENTION… It NEEDED work on its TECHNIQUE.
The fishing was steady and productive. We limited-out in just over an hour. And when we returned to the boat launch, it took nearly a half-hour of waiting to trailer the boat. The Public Launch was open for business, and business was GOOD. A full parking lot!
The fishermen we got to visit with were friendly, courteous, and helpful. Thanks, WDFW. And thanks to those friendly and helpful fishermen at Williams Lake!
