Went to Riffe Lake portion of the Cowlitz River below the Cowlitz Falls Dam and above Taidenpam Park. Was hoping to get some landlocked silvers, but ended up with Rainbows. The water level is much lower then when I was last here, but we started throwing spinners without any hook ups. With the fast moving current we were sure of the best way to fish off the bottom but decided back bouncing was worth a try. Put a massive corkie about 3 inches from a #6 baitholder on which we attached a whole nightcrawler. Cast this set up with between 1 and 1 1/2 ounces of lead on the mainline into a washout eddie. The fish SLAMMED this set up. In the first ten casts we had 6 hook ups with the fish actually chasing the rig to shore and attacking the corkie itself after the bait was gone. The bite was hot for a little while and then slowed either due to our extraction of the fish from the washout or the constant plunking of our gear giving them the spooks. We had one 18 inch trout two other 14 inchers and a few other smaller ones. Had them for dinner tonight and they had bright PINK meat. Delicious.
