The second that I tossed my line in the water I had a fat trout on. I'm pretty new to this and I must be doing something wrong when I set the hook because I keep losing the fish after I hook them. The guy that I was fishing with today said that it's because I am using those small treble hooks with the spring on them. Anyway, I did manage to get this baby on the dock. I'm thinking it's about 2.5 - 3 pounds. This is probably my biggest catch since I started fishing about a month ago. I was only out for 2 hours and I got this fish and missed about 4 others. Shore fishing has been pretty good on Lake Stevens.

hey nice fish. I personally dont like treble hooks with springs but I do like them with out. For powerbait I use size 14 and fish with slack in your line. When you do this it will allow the fish to take it and swallow the bait.So meanig watch youline for the bite not your pole

sweet fish... your doing well at lake stevens. Personaly, I would toss those treble hooks and go with a standard bait hook with the power bait. But each to his own. Really though, just switch up and try different style hooks. Also, I say this only because you said your new to fishing,, but if your fishing bait therefor it sounds like your keeping your fish, which is fine, a lot of people early on in fishing are too quick to set the hook. I am guilty of this sometimes too. I find that with powerbait trout fishing, just let them snack on it for a bit. It all depends on the lake/situation etc. but most simple trout aren't that picky or smart with power bait.

I'm going to use a standard hook with some power bait or power eggs today after work. When I get a bite I'll try to just let them munch on it for a bit this time too. I turn in to an excited little kid when I feel a fish on the line and it's like a natural reaction to try and set the hook.

Nice fish! I've done my share of power bait fishing over the years and never even caught one that big :) As far as the bites go, if I'm fishing with a tight line and notice a bite, I'll open the bail and point the rod tip down and let the fish run with the line for a few seconds. He won't feel the line, gives him time to eat the bait, and makes you wait before setting the hook. The other thing is you don't have to set the hook really hard. Most likely the bait's in his belly by then and a good pull on the rod will be a fine hook set.

I like using a small red gamakatsu egg hook. they are light enough so your power bait/eggs float well, and they are super sharp! where on the lake were you fishing?

I went out again after work today and pulled in a couple more. This time I got both fish that I hooked and none got away. I used a single standard hook with power bait. This time I waited a bit before setting the hook and then as I started reeling in and knew I had him on; I set it again. Not bad for just 1.5 hours of fishing. I'll be posting another report with pics tonight.

a good trick to hook trout is when you feel a bite let him take the bait all the way any just reel in kinda fast so you dont rip the lips on the trout. i have lost many trout to torn lips of not waiting for the trout to take the bait all the way.

Quadfather is right about treble hooks -- you'd be better off using a #6 or #8 single. You'll get much better penetration on hook sets, and it's less likely that a fish will be able to get off during the fight.

If you have trouble with powerbait flying off, switching from a round-bend to a sickle helps a lot. My favorite powerbait hook is the #6 Matzuo sickle octopus. Here's a link: http://lurepartsonline.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=1068

They also work GREAT on wedding rings.
