Went out to Silver based on past reports that I have read about this lake. I took my 8 year old and a pal with us. We initially were using worms, because the White Elephant store had run out of maggots. Some guys about 15 yards away from us came over and shared their maggots with us. Then they let us use their holes when they left and these holes were red hot! Thanks guys! I had a pop-up in a bucket which I gave them as a thank you. (I'm not a big fan of those for ice fishing.) After that the bite was on! We were fishing off the bottom with smaller "frosty" glow hooks and they were working pretty good. Was probably catching about 1 perch per minute. Lots of fun! The bad news....The biggest one we caught was about 6-8 inches. Smallest perch I have ever seen...They must starve them in the summer!

I need some advice. I was using my gas powered auger Ice master 2000- and it was stalling out in mid-hole. I think it could use a sharpening or a replacement on the edge. If anybody knows of any places that can service these beasts or sharpen these...I would appreciate it any tips or to where to go or what to do.

Hey I know a good trick to sharpening them...all you need is a table vise, some really fine sandpaper on a belt sander (high rpm is better). just lock in the blade and run that paper over it of about 30 seconds....sharpen on the angled edge only! if you sharpen the flat side you will get no grip on the ice...just pm me if you have any questions. good luck!

You can also buy a special carbon steel ice auger blade sharpener. Make sure it is for the ice augers only! You must never sharpen the flat side, never, not ever.

Nycfishguy, go to any of the small engine repair shops and they can usually set you up. I havn't seen a whole lot of large Perch from any of the area lakes, hardly. Last late march a couple of friends of mine and I fished Long Lake about 300 yds due east of the Tum Tum post office and filled a bucket with Perch from 10'' to 12'' with a couple pushing 14'' in 20 to 30 ft of water. I plan to try Eloika soon to see if I can catch some decent Perch so far most I have heard about where fairly small. Small or not they are tastey.
