Rufus is still a busy place. Went to RW 4 times in last 10 days, and only got to park in the launch lot once. We were putting in rather late in the day (10:00-noon), but lots of fishermen on the water. Did go to the third pen up river once, and found out I needed to refine my technique. My rendition of Outdoor Chris' "pellet fly" came up lacking. OH by the way, If there are those out there who doubts Chris' ability to count (related to past post), you should watch him fish. On the trip to the pens, my fishing buddie and I went to the side closest to shore and started fishing. On the river side of the pens there was a dude and his fishing partner hooked up with doubles (on fly rod) every time I looked up. It looked a lot like The boat Outdoor Chris fishes out of and they were knocking them dead. Keep the reels oiled, Man.
We caught a few here (wife boated a 5# 6oz), then we went down river hitting spots along the way.
We caught several trout for the smoker with the largest of the 4 outings being a 7# 2oz bruiser caught just below Brant's landing. Tons of small ones in the lower lake area, and we seemed to hit larger fish (overall) when we got up about the Cabin Hole. We caught trout in the Cabin Hole as shallow as 1 foot or so. They were chasing some sort of minnow in the weeds and the shallows. Fun, Fun, Fun. (Bone fishing wanna be)
Today we only brought home a dozen Yellow Perch (below pump #3 Joe) of average (8") size with a few in the 10" size. Several of the lil guys had the remains of small minnows in their stomach. Not only is the fishing good, there is the chance of seeing wildlife also. Saw coyotes, deer and bald eagles while on the water. Water temps continue to drop, so it will only get better.
We caught the above fish using 1/16 oz. jig heads, and small minnow/grub plastic baits, and Crocidiles. We favor Perch color in the minnow and Croc, and dark color in the grubs.

Any tips on where to catch the perch? Depth, location, anything would be helpful if you're willing to share.

Always willing to share a fishing tip (or tale).
Unfortunately I don't have a secret location or technique.
I have found the perch along the shorelines in the weeds growth, and also on the drop-offs. I have yet to find a "school" of suspended perch in RW, but have had success fishing the small coves (weedy) by dropping bait (small plastic minnow imitation for me) right down in the weeds. Have also used a Micro-nymph in dark colors to good effect. As we use artificial lures for the Tripps, we haven't used the worm set-up, but am confident it would work.
If you go up-river from the corp launch or State park launch a couple of miles, you will notice a pumping station on the Colville side of the river that is at the end of a jetty, and enclosed with wire.
Fish in the eddie below this pumping station and along the "deep" shoreline for a couple hundred yards. Fish slow and right in weeds in the eddie, and cast to shore and let bait follow bottom structure back to boat. You'll probably pick up some tripps this way too.
There are many places to catch the perch (even around the dock area), but this is a place that has produced for us.

now at last I know who you are!! wish I would have come over and chatted a bit with you that day, am sure we will see each other there in the future....my wife and I didn't fish a whole day, we had some "complications" that day, near as we can figure, one of our fine dogs....(who is very lucky not to have found himself being dinner that night), pushed her purse over the side of the boat by the launch. Unfortunately, she likes to carry a lot of change in it and it must have sunk to the depths there. She noticed the purse missing half way through the day so that was the end of fishing for the day. We fished the net pens for a while and then went to one of our good shoreline holes down the river and knocked them dead there using spinners, orange and green in color casting to the shoreline. We finally had 163 for the day so it was a good day but a little slow at the upper pens.

hey ya, Chris
Sorry to hear about the mishap that shortened the fishing day. It was entertaining to watch the fishing at the pens, and to see all the action on "your" side of the pens. It was way cool to see your wife hooked into the fish and doing battle by your side. that's something you have to experience to appreciate. Keep up the good work (fishing). After being to actually see the fish and watch their reactions, I now have a better idea how to present to them. I've been working on my "pellet fly" production and hope to have a chance to try it out on Thur morning. Will submit a post if I can make the trip.
