I decided to go to Medical Lake for some fishing and to watch the Air Show going on at Fairchild. The air show was pretty good, but the fishing was better.

The wind was an issue for most of the day as it was gusting to about 25 from the SW. I anchored near the rocks in the middle and began to work a blond Stayner Ducktail along the bottom. I began to catch fish on the second cast as I worked the center of the lake at about 20' or so.

The Stayner has been the only fly I have used for about 3 weeks as it has been killing them at the local lakes. I stayed for about 4 hours and caught over 25 fish. About 6 were Browns and all were at least 15" with a couple of 22 inchers landed and 2 more lost near at the net.

Tight lines!

You must have found were they were. Mike and I were out there also, but fished the lake south of the aerator and marked very few fish. Mike picked up a couple of browns and I only got some good strong hits. He was getting them on his one only white wooly bugger, just the fly that I didn't have in my box :-(

Ruel Stayner, the creater of the Stayner Ducktail, was a great guy that lived and worked out of Twin Falls Idaho. The man was a genius when it came to still water fly fishing; a genius I was previlidged to know during my teen years.

Ruel use to say that the fly worked as well when you changed the olive body for other colors as well. I have a bunch tied in a perch variant using a variegated yellow/brown chenille. If you have perch in your body of water, it may be worth trying some of them as well.

Still, that standard tie is sure a great fly.
