I took my business partner to Amber for his first try at fly fishing this morning.

We got on the water by 8:00am and began to get strikes immediately. We were using a variant of an Olive Willie that I tie and sinking line. in the first 30 minutes we landed 8 fish between us. Mostly 14" to 16" with one 20" fish in there. All Rainbows.

For the next hour and a half the lake turned off. My finder was showing plenty of fish down there but we couldn't get a bite no mater what we threw at them. Amber is famous for this type of action.

We decided to move to the south end shallows and try damsels with floating line. This was a good decision. In the next hour or so we caught another 8 fish between us. I think he is hooked!!

The biggest fish of the day was a 23" fatty I caught about 6' from the pontoon boat. He came out of nowhere and took the damsel just as I was about to re-cast. Crazy!

Where did the cutthroats go in this lake? This is my 5th trip this year with no cuts.

Tight Lines!

Nice report. I'll be fishing Amber soon. To bad to hear the cutthroats have vanished in such a dramatic fashion :(

Rooscooter,

Great report, makes me want to head out there soon. Cutts are few and far between Amber.......I manage only 2-3 a year in roughly 20 outings. The males are beautifully colored! Good to hear there are still a few 20" bows there, for I haven't seen a lot this year.
