was going to hit the saltwater today, but got a friend coming up from Seattle tomorrow and she really wants to get in on the lings, so i settled for a quick trip to Lake Samish (12:30-2:30). As usual, got the ol' pole cat. that's right folks, I've been to this lake 8 times, and not even a nibble!! wanted to target bass today, just to keep me on my toes. reading other reports i thought it might be warming up...not so much up north here. Man, i tell you...even in five feet of water the warmest i saw was 52*. i was throwing a 3/8 oz mimic minnow jig with a 2" or so mimic minnow tail. i did spook two right away in about 4ft, looked to be about 14-16". i thought this lake only had largemouth, but a guy at the launch tells me there are smallies too. this is a TOUGH lake to fish, cold and deep.....only boat on the lake.

well at least you know they are there
maybe you need to try a more subtle technique like using 6lb fluorocarbon and flipping weightless night crawlers in the shallows you could also do this with unweighted soft plastics

good luck

Roland let me know when you hit the lake, i am only 10 minutes from the launch. I havent been there lately because of being skunked so many times. Last fish i caught out of there was a few months ago and it was a 17 inch cutty.

big fish lite line, you're right, i did see something. i was using 4 lb fluoro (my trout setup), but i was being a bit aggressive, you are right. i was going to try a 5" white "hawg" gulp bait, but i thought it might be to big for early in the season, but i will try that next time. thanks for the advice!! sure Jerome, we can go get skunked together!! it may be short notice, but i'll let you know...

Yes, Samish is a tough lake to fish, clear water, lots of cover with wary bass. Nice to sight fish, but I rarely catch one that I see. Most of my catches have come blind. Used to just largemouth then smallmouth started to show up past couple of years. I have yet to catch a smallie there, but last year I saw over a dozen on the South end one day -- all on beds. I have gotten skunked many times there, but also had one 10 bass day & have caught several between 5 & 6 lbs. Saw one guy with an 8 pounder & that keeps me coming back. Should get better when water temps get 55-60.
