It was the first nice day of 2008 and four of us, Mike, Dave, Joe and I were going to take full advantage of it. Dave and I met Mike and Joe at the lake around 11:00 a.m. We were all successful in hooking and landing fish. All, both browns and rainbows were very good sized and healthy. The water temperature was about 48 degrees and the air temperature was in the upper 60's. There was a light breeze out of the northeast with clear skies. Many of the fish were hanging at about 7-14 feet and mostly in shallower water around 20'. The water was very clear.
The fish were found in isolated spots. We went down the middle of the lake and didn't read any fish at all. It was apparent that they were hanging over the weeds feeding on chironomids and very small scuds, both in shades of green. There wasn't any surface insect action, although a very few midges were seen. The best success was with flies in black, orange and olive green.
We all had a great time. Next time when the water temperature is below 50 degrees, I am wearing my electric socks! It took a good hour for my toes to thaw out.
