Well, Spring break's here, the sun is shining, its warm out, and the fish are NOT BEING COOPERATIVE! I fished off the dock with no bites, then took my boat out to do some trolling, but there was no action near the surface using plugs, spoons or spinners, so I whipped out the trusty portable downrigger, rigged up with a wedding ring and worm combo 18" behind a number 000 dodger, clipped it on, and sent it on its way into the depths of Battle Ground Lake. What I did was fish ten to fifteen feet off the bottom, trolling slowly (so my downrigger dosen't get ripped off if I get hung on a log), and it did the trick. I immediately began to get hits, but either my hook wasn't sharp enough, or the trout weren't really striking it, but after four hits, i finally got one on only to lose it at the boat. I then switched to a small frog patterned flatfish and the fish committed themselves this time. I caught my limit, but it wasn't fast paced action i was used to. Oh well. I recommend that bank anglers wait till the next stocking and for boat anglers to fish deep and slow, or bounce powerbait on the bottom. There is no surface activity what so ever, and if the Comorants aren't swimming, then the fish are down deep. The WDFG are planning another stocking soon (sorry I can't tell you the exact date, but my contact doesn't want me to release it). Good luck and Tight Lines!
