Nice to be back out on the water again. I fished from around 10:30-2:00. I just got my baitcasting combo the other day, and I've been itching to try it out. Well, the verdict is, I suck. But I'll get better. The weather was overcast and a little cold, but no rain or anything. I was shallow fishing for bass, hoping some of them had moved up, because I really didn't want to spend my day bouncing a grub in 30' of water when I had a brand new baitcaster. I actually saw a couple bass jump around, but with my ineptitude I wasn't able to get my firetiger Shad Rap in front of them. I know, terrible lure choice, but I just wanted something to cast. The only bite I got was while while trolling relatively fast going to my next spot. Besides one other boat and the shore guys, I had the lake to myself. I saw a shore guy catch a nice fat trout while we were launching though, I saw a lot of active trout near the surface today.

It's still early, but it's a great time to practice that baitcaster in the yard. Then you can concentrate on fishing and not be preoccupied about your equipment or skills. You will have a great season.

When you get used to it, you will love the bait caster for heavier lures like jigs etc, but there will always be a place for your spinning outfit for lighter lures like floating Rapalas. Taut lines and good luck!

I was out there yesterday and boy was the action dull. Lots of shore fisherman but i saw and heard of no action. While i was fishing though someone on the lake was having a party and they had a Mariachi Band. Never been to a concert while fishing before.

I haven't used any thing other than a bait caster for the past 18 years. I have fished fresh&salt with no problem all types of fish from blue gill to red fish. I have fished with others open face, spinning reels. The best for feel is the bait caster with a med-heavy rod. I used a coffee can in the yard to get may target down, and work on back lashes. Use of heavy line will help, until you fill you can down size your line. I don't use any thing under 14 and at times they still break it on the hit. Good luck and don't give up.
