Arrived at Fourth of July at about 12:30.....I was in no hurry due to the recent cold snap and wanted the sun to get good and high before my arrival! I found the ice itself to be absolutely treacherous. 90% of the ice is wind-blown, devoid of snow and is as slick as any I've seen. Highly recommend that you walk the eastern edge of the lake en-route to your favorite area. There is some snow in these areas that provides for some decent footing. Snowy patches begin to materialize just short of the first narrows. It was in this area that I fished. The ice measured at a full 8", a full 2" more than a week ago. I found the fishing to be slow, though, managing only three 12-15" rainbows in nearly four hours of fishing. Constant jigging even failed to bring the usual results. These takes, along with three others that I missed, were very subtle, unlike those hard-charging and violent takes I was getting last week. Oh well, that's why we call it fishing and not catching! I went with Swedish Pimples tipped with salmon eggs today. Good luck and be very carefully if visiting this lake!
