I was going to take my son to Horseshoe Lake (PO Co.) since I had actually caught a couple decent trout from shore last time but I didn't feel like driving the washboards so I gave him the choice of fishing Horseshoe or Fan....he picked Fan Lake instead.....kinda interesting leaving the fishing decision to a 2.5 year old. So we ended up getting to Fan around 10:30am, probably not the best time but nobody was there, it was overcast, and in the 70's, nobody at the YMCA camp either. Well that all changed with due time, the clouds burned off, it got warmer but not terribly hot, and there was a moderate (4-5 vehicle) gathering at the camp which got louder by the hour. We left about noon with having caught two small fish at the boat launch. The fish catch was a 6" largemouth and the second one, purely by accident, was a 8" bullhead. My son was having more fun giving his plastic dinosaur "a drink" and feeding the bluegill bits of worm than he was in fishing....he is only 2 after all. So as I helped him feed the last worm to the bluegill that hide out under the edge of the concrete launch, I started to reel in, had though I was snagged in the weeds but since I didn't feel like loosing my rigging, I played it out, and come to find out I had the catfish on there....it never pulled my line tight or moved it...it was the first time he had seen a catfish and he was rather amused by the whiskers. I released both fish back rather easily since I luckily had them both hooked in the lip. The yellow jackets had also started getting more active as the day got warmer and sunnier too....unlike at Horseshoe which I never saw one yellow jacket.....I saw about 5 LMB fingerlings near the beach launch too so we know they are reproducing....or else got planted by someone.....Fan is an ok lake I guess, easy for me to get to from Deer Park but probably better from a boat and at better times of the day......
