In spite of rain in the forecast, I wanted to hit the northend of Horseshoe Lake today and see how good of a spot it really was. I'm not entirely sure if its private property because it goes straight from the road to the water. So I arrived around 6:30am, there was some good toppers out there and not too terribly far from shore. I first put on a worm with corn scented powerbait. I hooked a 10" rainbow not too terribly long after casting out. I was going to release this one but when I went to get the hook out I noticed there was tackle hanging out of its mouth. There was a wedding ring and a bit of fishing line with powerbait on the hook. Im not sure how long the hook had been in its mouth as there was much powerbait left. So in trying to get both hooks out, I tried to revive it but it never came around and died shortly after. And of coarse, my stringer was nowhere to be found....I lose stringers like my dryer eats socks. So with having a spool of fishing line I threaded the line through its gill, tied it and tied the other end to a rock....it was the best I could do with what I had. About an hour later I hooked a 12" rainbow in the lip and released it after getting a picture of it. I wouldn't get a bite again for another hour and then I thought I hooked a really good one but instead noticed it was a carp when I got it closer the shore. It gave a good shake and tore itself loose before I could land it. I didn't get another bite for another hour and decided to wander closer to the little lilypad area, scaring a three hand-sized bullfrogs in the process. I caught a few small bluegill but that was about it. I saw a osprey and a bald eagle as well who both circled over me eyeing my strung up trout. I left around 11:30am and since the trout was pretty icky looking by then and as stiff as a board, I decided to toss it back for the eagle who was still circling overhead. I didn't get to see him take it but while packing everything into my trunk I saw it dive and heard it hit the water. Next time I go there I'm going to have to remember to bring a garbage bag with me, there was quite a bit of trash in spite of two "please don't litter" signs. I picked up what garbage I could and headed home. It sprinkled off and on but not so much that I had to seek shelter. I only saw one other person out fishing in a boat.
