I came home from work and noticed the storm about to blow in at 8pm. I thought the fish would be biting so I headed to the dock off my building near Madison Park. I had an immediate strike on my first cast, but I lost the fish. About 30 minutes later I got 2 kokanee one was apx 14 inches and the other was nice and fat and around 18 inches. (I think they were kokanee, I'm new to fishing in the NW - they had a dark, almost black back and a silver belly with really no spots) I caught these with a #4 silver inline spinner - they hit the lure 30-40 feet off the dock and I was using a medium steady retrieve with the lure running maybe 2-3 ft beneath the surface. It seems like the water is plenty deep off the end of the dock - at least 20-30 feet. The water was choppy and it was sprinkling. Then I saw a huge bolt of lightning arc from above the lake to strike somewhere on the eastside and I decided to pack it in!

Well welcome to NW fishing Sarah. I fish the lakes hard for the next 2-3 mounths then focus my attention to the rivers.
Best of luck and tight lines.

Hey Sarah,
Lake Washington has just about every kind of fish you can think of, but one I've never caught there is a kokanee. I'm thinking maybe it was whitefish that you caught...a salmonid and close cousin of the trout. Your description definitely sounds like a whitefish--they are abundant in the lake, and good in the smoker if you have one. Welcome to Pac NW fishing!

There are kokanee in Lake Washington and Sammamish. However, you may only keep them if they are less then 15" or less and Sammamish is closed for kokanee. Their numbers are low. I've caught a few on a worm that were about 12 - 15". The one you caught may have been off limits or an early coho. I've caught some small coho on a worm in July.
