I launched my 12' jon boat at the public access at 5:15 AM. I talked with a couple of the locals who were launching just ahead of me and they said to use plastic worms with no weight. Cast onto the lilly pads and walk your worm off. As soon as you clear the pads, start short jerking back to the boat. So that's what I did. I was using Berkley's Gulp in a "Triple Marguarita" color. I stopped my boat about 20 - 25 yards off the lilly pads and cast to them. I walked the worm off the pads and started short jerks toward the boat. Only 15 minutes after I launched, I brought a nice 17 1/2" Bass to hand. After I landed that fish I must have hooked about 10 more but they all got off, leaving me with a hook full of weeds.
The best fishing was up until 7:00 or so, then they seemed to just shut down. So, I went to the slough at the north end. I pinched my worms in half and used only the tail section. Inside the mouth of the slough, I landed three more small eaters and 1 nice large Crappie. All in all it was the best day of bass fishing I've ever had. I'm giving this lake a 5 star rating but negotiating the weeds was troublesome to say the least. Perhaps all that weed cover is part of the reason I did so well today. I left the water at 12:15 PM.
