we went out the after noon (2pm on the water) of may 26th, not expecting to see any musky yet, let alone catch any. about 30mins later muskyhunter28 had his 41" hooked up with a small black and red bucktail. about an hour later i had my 40" on with a large black and red bucktail. i had 2 followers and saw 4 other musky hanging out on the bottom not doing much(two of them had to be pushing upper 40's). muskyhunter28 had another one hit, but he missed it.

the water clarity is better then what it was a few weeks ago, but not as clear as it was last year. i have NO idea what the water temp was. we don't have that feature on the fish finder... but the water was COLD. the sun was off and on and i think i lost one potential fish that followed when he saw my shadow and bolted. the wind picked up and there was some chop on the water, which is when i got mine. these fish all seemed to be handing off inclines in about 8 to 10 feet of water. they where coming up from the deep in classic ambush mode.

these fish seemed more aggressive then you'd expect this time of year. they went for the smaller bucktails and the larger ones too. we were using our standard bucktail retrieve speeds.

these fish are defiantly early spring fish, they are very under weight for their length. the 41" was 19lbs. i didn't bother to weigh mine, but he was on the light side too.

there was one musky that was begging to be caught, we thought we would get him because he was the one that Muskyhunter28 missed and on the next pass i got him to follow my lure... we gave him a hour or so and went back to see if we could get him. in the end he either gave up on us or found something better to eat. he wasn't there the third time.

all in all it was a great early musky fishing day!

obviously muskyhunter28 doesn't know that muskies don't start biting until july or august because the water is too darn cold in May....

but still, I enjoyed reading the report.

I keep hearing that they don't bite until July, or August.
But I believe that fish do eat all year. I know I don't stop eating just because its cold outside!
