I find no better month than May to fish Whatcom. Last year I produced a number of 4+ lbers, and this year was a great start. Got on the water around 7:30am and fished only until 10am. The wind was howlin' and I knew I would be fishing fast. I started with a chartreuse spinner with grub trailer, no luck. Switched to a kind of shad pattern x-rap and landed four smallies, one of which was pushing 4lbs+. What seems to work the best is fishing from 3-10 ft. of water, with rock cover and pilings, also corners of docks, fishing fast with search baits. No doubt, Whatcom is the best kept secret for monster smallies.

How is the shore fishing around Lake Whatcom?

Shore fishing is very limited with all the property around the lake being private land. The boat launch in bloedell has one little spot that you can cast toward some old pilings.

Best luck latley has been taking a right from blodell and heading straight to where the lake narrows, where the old pilings are. Fish the back side break where a little tree is planted in a big 'ol pot, all over that area. It's a good spot to start with spinners, jerk baits, or crank baits.
