What a day!
My good friend Sam Kafelafish and I once again went to check out Beaver Lake to see what we could catch. We Didn't have any boats today so we decided to beach fish off the boat launch just for fun. We used white power eggs with about a 3-4 foot leader off the bottom for the new little planters fishing three hours from about 7:30-10:30 am. Things started out pretty good with relatively sufficient action. In the beginning I think we started out getting about 6 little planters and then things seemed to go down hill from there. Both our lines were in the water and we weren't getting much action so we just talked and browsed through our tackle boxes. All of a sudden we heard a big SWOOP SWOOP and a giant blue heron flew out trying to grab a dead fish right in between our soaking lines. The heron’s wing got caught around Sam’s line and he frantically ran over to grab the pole before the heron made off with it. Sam reeled in the heron and I had to attempt to untangle its wing. The line untangled itself before I could work on it and the heron flew away. I was surprised how relatively calm it stayed throughout the ordeal. After that we put what happened behind us and continued to keep fishing. About half hour later after catching another planter I cast out my line in the biggest rainbow cast I could cast. When my line was in midair I suddenly see two geese flying right at the level the line is traveling come out of nowhere. I said out loud, “NOT AGAIN” right as the first goose flew past my line and the second goose gets wrapped with it in midair. I then braced myself as the goose continued to fly as if nothing happened. I’m sure the goose received a big surprise as I pull back as it was landing and jerked the goose backwards in mid air snapping my line. The goose did a somersault in midair and took about 50 feet of line with it and continued to fly away. I Couldn't believe how the day had gone so far. Two birds in one day on accident. Nevertheless I set up my line again and rebaited again and redeemed myself with a nice 18 inch triploid. It was the most colorful RBT I have ever caught. It was a darker yellow color, spotted, and was very red on the head and side and had a purple bottom fins. We kept a couple trout planters and the triploid. Sam smoked the fish and the meat tasted horrible. Not his fault with the smoking at all. He did a good job. It was a good day overall, but the craziest fishing experience I’ve ever had.
