We all know that I can go off on tangents when it comes to fishing experiences--- the weather, the air, the ambience... But the BBs of BL went to Hog Canyon this morning to fish and everything just CLICKED in the great fishing experiences department! Good, calm weather, a flat lake surface, fish in the lake, quiet as the rule, a captive audience for my jokes... Whoopee!!
We took The Doghouse to Hog Canyon to fish. We used the boat launch and while we did, we wondered: Why aren't ALL our lakes equipped with such easy-to-use boat ramps? We completed the sea-and-anchor detail and had the boat fishing-ready in no time, thanks to the conditions of the public facilities.
Electric motors rule at this lake--- trolling with one may not be rocketship-fast, but the quiet one allows you to enjoy makes the slower trip worth it. While we were holding our fishing poles, waiting for fish to bite, we heard every bird that resided near the lake comment on our fishing. Honking geese, crows, the whistle of ducks as they flew overhead---nice stuff. What made things still nicer is that we CAUGHT FISH while the wildlife held their hullaballoo! We caught BIIIG rainbow trout, full of fight, some with "humped backs" that frequently broke the calm surface of the lake as we would battle back at them. No kidding. These were BIIG FISH. We used wedding rings (as usual) but the fish responded to them in bursts: We would catch a few fish then... troll around for awhile then... catch a few more! We made it to the north end of the lake where there is an honest-to-gosh WATERFALL emptying into the lake. Folks: You gotta see it!!
To summate: THIS was a great fishing experience. Telling tall tales of fishing prowess to the other fellow in the boat while having your fishing pole nearly yanked from your hands due to a fiesty rainbow trout resisting your lure, and while a waterfall whispers in the distance and geese honk overhead--- PRICELESS. Hog Canyon delivered a great time fishing. There WAS a duck there with an attitude about our fishing though... he quacked me up!
