When I arrived at the lake, around 9:00 A.M., there was a thick cloud bank completely engulfing the entire lake. Visibility was only 50-100 yards. The fog didn't seem to bother the German Browns that were cruising within 10 feet of the launch. Conservatively speaking, I would estimate 1000 fish were within flipping distance. Some were quite sizable, pushing 20" or more. And, they were very active. Clearing the surface by 2-3 body lengths. I think everyone who saw them tried casting to them, but no one I'm aware of had any luck.
I launched my boat and started out dragging a Giant Cowbell flasher with an F4 Perch Scale flatfish on a two foot leader. I was fishing 60' of Cajun Red mono with a 1/2 ounce weight. Within 1 minute after I started, I hooked then landed a nice 16" Brown. I thought this was going to be a cakewalk and I'd be off the lake in 1/2 hour. After 2 more hours, I finally hooked and landed a 13" Rainbow. That was in front of the resort about 100 yards offshore. Then about 1/2 hour later I landed a nice Brown of 13". I fished another couple of hours without any luck. During the day, I heard a Loon 3 times, an Eagle once, and saw two Eagles. Those two birds are always a bonus for me. My family used to fish Waitts regularly about 50 years ago. It was great to see the lake and hills again. The fog finally cleared about noon. I will be back next year.
