Tapps Closed To Fishing Because Of Drought

Post by Don Wittenberger » Fri May 08, 2015 1:33 pm

KING 5 News reported yesterday that Lake Tapps may remain closed to boating and fishing all summer due to drought. (See link below). Tapps is an impoundment fed by snowmelt that enters the lake via the White River. Snowpacks are at record low levels this spring. In the Olympic Mountains, snowpack is 4% of normal for this time of year, and statewide, snowpacks are about 17% of normal. No snow, no water. We need spring rains!

Also, WDFW advises me there will be no tiger muskie stocking at Tapps this year or next.

The tigers that were headed to Tapps have been sent to Idaho. A bummer locally but at least they are going somewhere. Looks like more trips to Mayfield and Merwin for many of us this season. Also going to be a bad fire season. I expect a statewide burn ban to be in effect by June but obviously check around to confirm. Just rare for western Washington. Already had a few brush fires in the more rural areas of Pierce County, not a good sign this early in the year.
