Different Comment Sorting for Rivers and Lakes

I feel like I might be missing an option somewhere, but I've noticed the Lake reports I read have the oldest comments first (#1, #2, etc.) and the river comments have the newest comments first (#3, #2, #1). It looks like saltwater reports are the same way as river reports. To me having the older comments first makes the most sense, but I was just curious if there's a reason they are different?
