Looking for a pressure cooker for canning

Post by spokey9 » Mon Aug 26, 2013 9:24 am

I'm looking for a used pressure cooker. I want to try canning my smoked salmon and amongst other things and don't want to jump out and spend a bunch of money on a new unit while i'm figuring out if it's something i want to do or not. I'd prefer something that's at least a 16 qt.
Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga, except i still get to kill something.

I can't help you here Spokey9 but I am considering getting one myself. Any advice as to size or features to look for would be welcome. New, the price difference between 16 and 23 quart is negligible. Is bigger better in this case? I hope you don't view this as hijacking your thread.

I found mine at a thrift store for 5 bucks, it's only a 16 quart, but it works well.

Just make sure it has the weight and seal

Spokey, I know you said you did not want to spend a ton of money, so disregard if you wish. But the wife and I bought the presto 23 quart pressure canner and have loved it. It is currently 74$ on amazon and I think thats about what we paid for it. I have canned a ton of stuff in it. This year I am hoping to smoke and can salmon :)

Then again if I had found the deal Mordalphus did Id have me a 16 quart one, Thats a heck of a steal!

I have a big one that you can borrow to see if you like it. You want to get the biggest one, because canning meat and stuff takes forever, and if you can only fit three jars in, you're steaming up the house all day. If you have a big outdoor burner that would work too, but I'm in an apartment. I'm a big fan of canned salmon, pinks especially. Also chili.

Thanks for the link datsun and Nate thank you for the offer. I'd take ya up on it but the other half got me one for my b'day. After price matching and her lowe's discount it was right around 50 bucks for a 16qt Mirro.

I used my neighbors for 2 years and I just bought the amazon Presto $74 one. I wanted to get more done at once. I canned Kokanee and got rid of the canned tuna I bought. It is so good!!!

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
