Nissan 9.8 4 stroke
Nissan 9.8 4 stroke
I am looking at purchasing a newer Nissan 9.8 four stroke. Curious if anyone has had one of these, and if they tend to be a good motor. I am looking at them primarily because they are light and fairly inexpensive. I currently have a suzuki which I love, but it is only a 6 horse and is just too small. Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Do yourself a favor and look at the Tohatsu instead, it's the exact same motor and for a better price. Tohatsu also manufactures Mercury outboards under 30hp as well.

What is the difference between Tohatsu and Nissan outboards?
You may have noticed many similarities between Tohatsu and Nissan outboards. That is because Tohatsu is the maker of all Nissan outboards. They are identical with the exception of cowling decals. You pay a slightly higher premium for the Nissan branding. There is no difference in features, warranty, etc... Literally, the only difference is the decals on the cover.
9.8hp Tohatsu short shaft, manual start, free delivery to your door, $1878.88 and no tax.Does Tohatsu make Nissan? Does Tohatsu make Mercury?
Yes. Tohatsu makes ALL Nissan outboards and many smaller HP Mercury outboards. For Nissan outboards please visit our Nissan Marine website at http://www.NissanOutboard.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. We do not sell Mercury outboards as Tohatsu and Nissan are considerably less expensive than the Mercury label.

Re: Nissan 9.8 4 stroke
I have a 2010 15 hp 4-stroke Nissan on my 15-foot skiff and love it. The only complaint I have about the motor is even at it's lowest speed it's a bit too fast for trolling. Great motor though, 5-stars! And a 9.8 might not have that problem.
And what hewesfisher said is absolutely correct. Whichever brand is cheapest (Nissan, Merc,Tohatsu) -- that's the one to get! Engine is the same in all of them.

I use my neighbors 8 hp Tohatsu 2 stroke I dont know the exact year but a fantastic trolling motor on my 17' center console trolls down very nice and will troll all darn day without missing a beat and on virtualy minimal fuel. Good luck with your choice. Dennis
