Use Or Exchange This Water Separator?

I finally bought a water separator for the boat. It's a Moeller kit with the clear bottom bowl.

Anways, my intention was installing it in the splash well area. Since it's exposed, I decided to go with the aluminum head for durability. I may still install it in the bilge. I just need to verify if I can get access for the gas line down in there somewhere.




The X is where the nipple is for the gas line in my splash well.

Anyways, so the kit showed up today. I was looking it over and notice this.


The dark spots on the ring is pitting. There's 1 very large pitting. And several small ones. You can easily make out 3 in the picture. Anyways, this is the surface where the rubber seal will meet.

Is it a problem? Or can I just use it as is? Only hassle is, I bought it online.

As far as corrosion resistance aluminum in not the choice compared to the stainless version and for a few bucks more i would go that route. But then again i would have it mounted inside out of the elements and done to boat building specs (proper fuel line,secured,distance from battery) i don't know how many of these I have seen installed incorrectly and therefore would rec professionally installed. just my two cents.

I dont go out to the salt, so I figure aluminum should be no problem.

I may still mount it inside the bilge. Just havent had time to go check out the location of the gas line yet.

Also, I just heard back from Moeller. They said it wont be a problem and the filter seal will cover it up fine.

I would like to update. I installed the kit inside 1 of the compartments. It's a hassle removing part of the rear deck to access a gas fitting. I may install one of those deck access hole thingy above it in the future.

The boat has been out only once so far, but it worked great! No problems yet.

Nice Job! And nice clean wiring too... Will it be easy to get access to it so you can see if the bowl is full and empty it, etc..?

cant take credit for the wiring. the factory or dealer did that. I just followed it with the new wirings.


Anyways, yep it should be easy to drain or change filters. Do have to stick my head inside the compartment to look at the bowl to see if there's any water though.
